Weight management in children and adolescents
Weight gain is controlled by addressing eating habits,
physical activity and inactivity, psychosocial and family issues.
Dietary suggestions include:
 | a balanced, varied diet for the whole family |
 | meals at regular times; avoid grazing and TV snacks |
 | smaller portions |
 | avoid using food/snacks as rewards or treats |
 | healthy snacks e.g. fruit instead of sweets, chocolates,
crisps, nuts, biscuits, cakes |
 | less energy-dense food e.g. semi-skimmed milk, low
fat spreads |
 | whole foods which take time to eat e.g. fruits |
 | at least five portions of fruit and
vegetables per day |
 | low calorie drinks preferably water |
 | grilled, boiled or baked foods without added fat (no
frying) |
Physical activity can include:
 | any increase in current activity will help |
 | aim for sustainable lifestyle activity e.g. walking,
cycling, using stairs instead of lifts |
 | developing an active lifestyle for the whole family |
 | walking or cycling to school |
 | decrease TV viewing and other sedentary behaviours |
 | encourage active play that is enjoyable and activities that
do not cause embarrassment |
