Weight management in children and adolescents

Weight gain is controlled by addressing eating habits, physical activity and inactivity, psychosocial and family issues.

Dietary suggestions include:

bulleta balanced, varied diet for the whole family
bulletmeals at regular times; avoid grazing and TV snacks
bulletsmaller portions
bulletavoid using food/snacks as rewards or treats
bullethealthy snacks e.g. fruit instead of sweets, chocolates, crisps, nuts, biscuits, cakes
bullet less energy-dense food e.g. semi-skimmed milk, low fat spreads
bulletwhole foods which take time to eat e.g. fruits
bulletat least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day
bulletlow calorie drinks preferably water
bulletgrilled, boiled or baked foods without added fat (no frying)

Physical activity can include:

bulletany increase in current activity will help
bulletaim for sustainable lifestyle activity e.g. walking, cycling, using stairs instead of lifts
bulletdeveloping an active lifestyle for the whole family
bulletwalking or cycling to school
bulletdecrease TV viewing and other sedentary behaviours
bulletencourage active play that is enjoyable and activities that do not cause embarrassment
