Daily fluid intake

The average person should drink two litres per day. This represents just 4% of your total body water of 40-45 litres.

Whilst the type of liquid is not important, alcohol and caffeine have a diuretic effect so that every pint of liquid containing either will result in the passing of more than one pint of urine.

Avoid over-sugared drinks as the instant "high" may be followed by tiredness a few hours later.

A 2% drop in body water can result in a 20% drop in energy levels and a bottle of ice cold water may lead to revival in about 20 minutes.

Water increases metabolic rate

A study at Charite University Berlin has found that drinking the recommended 2 litres of still water daily stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and increases metabolic rate equivalent to 150 calories per day. Carbonated water does not have the same effect.
