Tinnitus is extremely common affecting one third of the population though only about 3% have troublesome tinnitus. Most cases are associated with an ear problem often hearing loss of age and noise induced hearing loss. Serious pathology is rare though unilateral tinnitus, pulsatile tinnitus and tinnitus associated with vertigo will require assessment by an ENT consultant.

Your ear will need to be examined to exclude wax, infection or middle ear fluid.

Spontaneous disappearance is possible, it is most unlikely to get worse, improvement over time is usual and there are means of helping and support from various organisations.

Radio, CD or tape player may take your attention away from the tinnitus. Leisure activities such as sports, going for walks and yoga often help.
