Sun beds, lamps and booths

These artificial sources of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are not less harmful than natural sun exposure. Sunbeds emit mainly UVA radiation which was promoted as safe. However, damage to DNA does occur with UVA and the situation is complicated as newer lamps emit more UVB to accelerate tanning. However, no large study has yet (2003) linked tanning lamps to malignant melanoma.

The Health and Safety Executive advises that sunbeds should not be used by those who

bulletare under 16
bullethave very fair skin
bulletburn easily or tan poorly
bullethave a lot of freckles or moles
bullethave had skin cancer or have a family history of skin cancer
bulletare using medication that could make their skin more sensitive to UVR
bulletalready have extensive UVR damage
