The practice contracts to provide agreed services to agreed quality standards
in return for a budget for 2003/04 of £185,954 to cover staff salaries, Health Centre rent &
rates, various other expenses plus a "profit" element for the business. The
"take home" pay of the doctors is the difference between this practice income
and the expenditure incurred in running "the business". It is the role of the
practice manager to keep "the business" solvent so that the doctors can
concentrate on the provision of quality medical services.
The new General Medical Services (GMS) contract (quoted in the press as the
new GP contract) should build on the best of PMS leading to quality medical
services being directly rewarded.
