Mercury and vaccines

Thiomersal, which contains ethylmercury, is used as a preservative in some vaccines. In June 2003, a BBC Radio 4 documentary reported a possible link to autism and similar disorders. Although it is being phased out by vaccine manufacturers on a precautionary basis, there is no good evidence linking it to any serious adverse events according to the UK Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM).
