In 1992 the Minster Medical Practice celebrated 100 years of medical service caring for the citizens of the City of Lichfield.

One of the many celebrations during the year was a service at Lichfield Cathedral offering thanksgiving for 100 years of medical care in Lichfield. The the Bishop of Lichfield Rt Revd Keith Sutton presented his emotional keynote address that is reproduced in our subwaiting area.

Two years later, it became apparent that your practice’s medical services date back to at least 1841. The research team that scoured the official records back to 1892 continued their endeavours. They realised that references to Herbert Major Morgan and Major Herbert Morgan were about different doctors. When the research came to an end your practice’s medical services had been traced back to 1841 and there were some tenuous links even earlier.

History is of interest but of course the practice could not have survived so long without keeping up to date with the latest developments in health care. Thousands of relevant publications appear every year. No doctor can remember all this important information particularly for conditions we meet rarely. We have therefore invested in powerful information services to support us in providing optimum care for you and your family.

We also recognise the need to provide you with information regarding maintenance of good health, prevention of ill health and about any medical conditions you have. Hence our wide range of practice designed leaflets that are available in our corridor and waiting areas. To provide more general information we set up the Minster Infotext system in the subwaiting area. This was the first such General Practice patient information system in the country. We used early BBC Ceefax software on a 32kb BBC microcomputer to display teletext type pages at 1kb per page. A lot more powerful system is necessary to provide our current Infotext service.

Our medical service is focused on the boundaries of the City of Lichfield. People moving outside Lichfield City often ask us to continue caring for them. This is a difficult decision, as we cannot provide optimal care for a population extending throughout the very much larger District of Lichfield and associated areas. This could mean attempting to provide care to an area extending to Hopwas, Little Aston, Stonnall, Muckley Corner, the Chase, Burntwood, Longdon, Whittington, Elford, Fisherwick etc. Unlike some practices around the country, we have decided to restrict our catchment area to the area that we can provide an equitable service.
