The bacteria Haemophilus influenzae  type B is responsible for several illness including one type of meningitis. For further information www.immunisation.nhs.uk The childhood immunisation programme offers protection during the first few months of life.

Illness caused by Hib

Example of serious complication
Meningitis 5% of children with Hib meningitis die
Epiglottitis Severe airway blockage can cause death
Septic arthritis Permanent joint damage, septicaemia
Osteomyelitis Long term bone infection, septicaemia
Cellulitis Septicaemia
Pneumonia Septicaemia, can cause death
