Abbreviations

 

 

The meaning of many of the abbreviations used on this site can be accessed via the button on the left. Let us know if any terminology is unclear and information will be added below.

Atherosclerosis "Hardening of the arteries": a condition in which arteries become clogged with plaque which contains cholesterol lipids and debris.
Lipid Any one of a group of fats and fatlike substances in food and in the body.
Plaque When associated with arteries, plaque is a yellow area of swelling produced by lipid deposits on the inner surface of arteries.
Plaque is also a colourless hard layer of microorganisms that accumulate on teeth and lead to dental decay if not regularly removed.
