Fireworks Safety

bulletOnly one person should be in charge of the fireworks. The nominated person should not drink alcohol until after all have been lit
bulletAll fireworks should be marked BS7114. It is illegal for the general public to buy or possess category 4 fireworks
bulletKeep fireworks in a closed box and only remove one at a time. Never put fireworks in your pocket
bulletFollow the instructions on each firework
bulletLight at arm's length, using a taper
bulletStand well back
bulletNever go back to a firework once it is lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode
bulletWear gloves when using sparklers and light one at a time
bulletKeep children under close supervision. Never give sparklers to children under 5
bulletKeep pets indoors

Time restrictions

November 5th: Set off up to midnight

New Years Eve, Chinese New Year, Diwali Festival: Up to 1am

All other times: No discharge after 11pm

Caring for your dog whilst fireworks are being let off locally

Keep your dog indoors during the evening hours, but remember to allow them to relieve themselves well in advance to avoid accidents later
bulletClose your curtains to block the lights and help absorb some of the sound
bulletTurn-up the radio or TV to provide some distraction
bulletIf outside, keep your dog away from fireworks on the ground, as they may want to investigate the novel smell
bulletKeep an updated and legible tagged collar around their neck – micro chipping is great, but should your dog get loose, you’ll want someone to be able to ring you immediately
bulletDo not underestimate your dog’s ability to attempt to escape from fear – keep your doors and windows securely closed (many dogs have been known to be able to  mysteriously “un-latch” doors whilst in a panic!)
bulletDo not coddle a frightened dog – it will only affirm their anxiety.  Rather, leave them in the place they’ve identified as safe for themselves, muffle the sight and sounds as much as possible and go about your business as usual
bulletIn severe cases, seek advice from your vet
