Caring for your dog whilst fireworks are being let off locally
Keep your dog indoors during the evening hours, but remember to allow them to relieve themselves well in advance to avoid accidents later
Close your curtains to block the lights and help absorb some of the sound
Turn-up the radio or TV to provide some distraction
If outside, keep your dog away from fireworks on the ground, as they may want to investigate the novel smell
Keep an updated and legible tagged collar around their neck – micro chipping is great, but should your dog get loose, you’ll want someone to be able to ring you immediately
Do not underestimate your dog’s ability to attempt to escape from fear – keep your doors and windows securely closed (many dogs have been known to be able to mysteriously “un-latch” doors whilst in a panic!)
Do not coddle a frightened dog – it will only affirm their anxiety. Rather, leave them in the place they’ve identified as safe for themselves, muffle the sight and sounds as much as possible and go about your business as usual
