February 2004 drug offence maximum penalties

Class A drugs

Examples include heroin, cocaine, crack, LSD and ecstasy

Possession:7 years' jail plus/or unlimited fine or both
Possession with intent to supply: life imprisonment, unlimited fine or both
Supplying: life imprisonment, unlimited fine or both

Class B drugs

Examples include amphetamines, barbiturates, codeines

Possession:5 years' jail or unlimited fine or both
Possession with intent to supply: 14 years' imprisonment, unlimited fine or both
Supplying: 14 years' imprisonment, unlimited fine or both

Class C drugs

Examples include cannabis, GHB, steroids

Possession:2 years' jail plus/or unlimited fine
Possession with intent to supply: 14 years' imprisonment plus/or unlimited fine
Supplying: 14 years' imprisonment plus/or unlimited fine
