National Cervical Screening Programme

From 1st October 2004 the policy is changing.

bulletInvitation for first smear changed to age 25
bulletBetween ages 25 and 49, smears will be at 3 yearly intervals
bulletFrom age 50  to 65, smears will be at 5 yearly intervals.

The modernisation of the programme to use liquid based cytology instead of "scrapes" will take place between now and the end of 2006 depending on the Strategic health Authority funding plans.

It has been suggested that 10% of women would not have a smear test if presented with clear concise and balanced information about the pros and cons of cervical cancer screening. The new NHS informed consent leaflet covers risks of cervical cancer, potential for false positives and false negatives and costs to the NHS.
