Also see Obesity. The main forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD) resulting from atherosclerosis are coronary heart disease and strokes. CVD causes 235,000 deaths each year; 50% from coronary artery disease and 25% from strokes. CVD is responsible for a third of the premature deaths in men and a quarter in women. It kills 50,000 more women each year than all forms of cancer. |
