Road traffic accident statistics:
2002: 3,431 deaths. (1998: 325,000 accidents with 3,400 deaths and 320,000 injuries)
Motorcycle deaths in 2002: 609 worst figure since 1990 and thought to be due to middle aged buying high performance bikes for use at weekends.
A steep drop in pedestrian child deaths as 20mph speed limits became more common around play & school areas led to an 18% drop in child deaths to 179 in 2002.

Speed kills:
10% of pedestrians hit at 20mph will die but this rises to 50% of those hit at 30mph.

20% of motorway accidents are caused by drivers falling asleep at the wheel. Get a good night's sleep before driving and plan regular stops during long journeys. If you feel tired pull off the motorway, have a nap and a strong coffee.

Accidents at home in 1998:
1.8 million people injured.

Carbon monoxide poisoning - the forgotten killer. 20 million households have gas appliances and attention to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is often focused on these households. However, the risk of dying is actually greater in the 2 million households relying on solid fuel.
